CARS had its Annual General Meeting on Friday, January 9 during the CCFFR Meeting in Ottawa. We discussed the many accomplishments of 2014, and set out some strategies and goals for the New Year!
Here are some of the key discussion points. All details are available in the attached PDF.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS of 2014
LEGENDS IN CANADIAN FISHERIES SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT
Last year, CARS launched a recognition program to highlight accomplishments of fisheries professionals in Canada. The awards honor lifetime achievements of Canadian fisheries scientists and managers. The names of inductees are presented on a plaque. Check out the PDF for details on 2014’s inductees.
** We are still looking for somewhere to hang the plaque. Please contact Steve Cooke if you have any ideas: Steven_Cooke@carleton.ca
CARS members are working on a book on the history, present knowledge, and future of aquatic and fisheries research and management in Canada. This book is still in the works, and should be published through AFS in early 2016.
The CARS ExComm has worked hard this year to design and implement a new communications strategy to alert members to the activities of CARS throughout the year. Check out and follow our facebook (Canadian Aquatic Resources Section (CARS) of AFS) and twitter (@CARSAFS) accounts, and contact us at the new gmail: firstname.lastname@example.org
** We want you to be involved!! Do you have a new publication or interesting news you would like to make available to other CARS members? Email us! email@example.com
GOALS FOR 2015
CARS and AFS are both dedicated to recruiting more members! 2014 saw a modest increase in numbers, but we want to grow even more. Do you know anybody who might be interested? AFS has a 50% off deal right now, and you can join CARS at the same time!!! Spread the word!
CALL FOR LEGENDS NOMINEES, 2015
The nomination process is simple: submit a name along with a few key points (or links to publications/websites) about the individual to Steven_Cooke@Carleton.ca by March 1, 2015. See the PDF for more information.
POLICY REVIEW PANEL DEVELOPMENT
CARS wishes to provide the provincial and federal government with a sound science point of view on policy and development as representatives of fisheries professionals in Canada.
For example, CARS recently reviewed statements on the Obed and Polley Mine spills, the proposed KSM mine in Northern BC, and Aquaculture Activities regulation. We want to continue to do this, but we need your help. See below.
WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED WITH CARS!
- Volunteer for our Policy Review Panel. If you have experience in policy, consider putting your name down to review letters and suggestions for the government!
- Seeking a new Treasurer. The treasurer manages the financial activities of CARS and sits on the CCFFR CRA. The term starts September 1. 2015.
- Do you have experience developing and writing corporate by-laws? We need your input on developing new by-laws for CARS!
Let us know if you are interested in getting involved by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
