Fisheries Act Information Sessions

In 2012, the Fisheries Act was amended in an attempt to better manage threats to the sustainability and productivity of Canada’s recreational, commercial and Aboriginal fisheries.  These amendments included:

  • Clear and consistent application of streamlined review process.
  • Enhanced compliance and protection.
  • Partnerships with agencies and organizations for best placed delivery of services.

CARS, in cooperation with the Ontario Chapter of the American Fisheries Society and the Mid-Canada Chapter of the AmericanFisheries Society will be sponsoring Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) information sessions about the Fisheries Act amendments in the following cities:


Burlington, ON – April 7 & 8

Burlington, ON – April 9 & 10

Calgary, AB – April 21 & 22

Calgary, AB – April 23 & 24

Saskatoon, SK – April 30 & May 1

Winnipeg, MB – May 12 & 13

Yellowknife, NT – June 16 & 17


At these sessions, Fisheries Act training will be provided by DFO Fisheries Protection Managers, Tom Hoggarth and Cindy Mitton-Wilkie.

The two-day session will cover:

  • Fisheries Protection Program Overview
  • Regulatory Review Process
  • Pathways of Effects
  • Case Studies
  • Offsetting
  • Navigating the website

Who should apply to attend?

Environmental and Aquatic Biology Consultants actively working with the Fisheries Act in central Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).

Where space permits, we will also accept applications from industry and government agencies.


Costs per participant:

Burlington – $525 plus 13% HST

Calgary – $600 plus 13% HST

Saskatoon – $525 plus 13% HST

Winnipeg – $525 plus 13% HST

Yellowknife – $600 plus 13% HST

All costs include Continental Breakfast, Breaks, and Lunch; and binder materials.

Due to limited space, please submit an Expression of Interest immediately by replying to this email with:

  • Organization name
  • Number of participants
  • Preferred and alternate (city and date). 

Expressions of Interest will be reviewed and all applicants notified accordingly. Once accepted, you will be provided with the Fisheries Act Training web link where payment and registration can be made. Where interest exceeds spaces available, a wait list will be maintained.
